General Educational Development (GED) Guidelines

(Pre-GED, and GED Class Guidelines and GED exam information)

 

The GED program has three components: Pre-GED, GED exam preparation, and Skills.

The Pre-GED class is designed to help students improve basic reading, writing, and math skills, so that they will be able to advance to the GED class. These students perform between sixth and ninth grade levels. The class meets from 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. daily. Transportation is provided.

The GED exam preparation class is designed to meet the needs of students whose reading, writing, and math skills are above 9th grade level. These students have earned few credits toward obtaining a high school diploma. Instruction is directed toward the requirements of the GED exam. Upon completion of the program, students are expected to be prepared to qualify for the GED certificate. The class meets from 7:30 – 10:30.

Skills are offered from 12:00 – 2:30 each day. (Cooking, Auto Detailing, Welding, Building Construction, C N A , Carpentry and Work Study)

REFERRAL

  • Requests for students to be considered for Pre-GED or GED classes may be made by parents, teachers, counselors, administrators
  • Interested students will meet with guidance counselor to discuss the GED programs and other available educational options.
  • The counselor will contact the parent to discuss the educational options.

ENTRANCE INTO THE PRE-GED CLASS

  •  Entry into the program is dependent upon available space in the class, in combination with age, number of Carnegie units, results on LEAP 21 and results on GEE 21.  All of these variables are weighed when the decision is being made for the opening(s) available.

ATTENDANCE

  • The high school attendance policy also applies to Pre-GED and GED.
  • Students will continue attending classes until GED exam scores have been received.
  • Those students who pass the GED exam have completed high school and may discontinue attending at that time.
  • Those students who do not pass the GED exam will continue to attend classes until they do pass, are released from compulsory attendance, or become 18 and decide to leave school.
  • Students under 18 years of age who do not return to class after taking the GED exam will be referred to the school social worker for possible court intervention.

AGE REQUIREMENT

  • Students must be at least 16 years old to enter the Pre-GED or GED program.

DROPPING PRE-GED OR GED TO RETURN TO HIGH SCHOOL

  • Students and their families are expected to carefully consider all educational options before entering Pre-GED or GED classes.
  • Once students enter Pre-GED or GED classes, they are expected to remain in the program until completion.
  • Once a student is enrolled, he or she cannot return to the high school to pursue a traditional diploma until the following school year.

ELIGIBILITY TO TAKE THE GED EXAM

 

  • All students may take the GED when they have:

- Scored 2500 total points and a minimum score of at least 500 on each part of the Official Practice Test.

- Completed all academic and vocational assignments.

Not missed at least (8) days per quarter
